Will BP Be Punished For Crimes Toward Animals?

I wonder... Since the BP disastrous oil spill, all that has been talked about (or what I have seen) is President talking about BP paying for the clean up, etc. Some people do actually talk about how disastrous this has been on the nature but I don't hear what kind of legal implications this incident will bring to BP due to a direct crime against animals. I've never been a big animal right activist or anything but this incident is different. It's not like US doesn't have laws about this. The Animal Welfare Act of 1966 has been there for a long time now. Many people have been convicted with very serious crimes with significant sentences. I don't know law that well but with direct correlation I have to imagine that BP has to get some kick-butt significant punishment. Will it happen under this corporate-run political world with money being the most important power? We'll see...
